Emergency breakdowns – 4 Post-Collision Tips before Calling in a Towing Service

by Constance Sanders

After a collision or road accident, it's likely your car will no longer be safe for driving and you'll require towing services. However, it's imperative to understand your rights as well as what to expect when the towing truck arrives. There are some essential steps to help you avoid unnecessary problems when towing your car after an accident. Read on to learn more.

Call Your Auto Insurance

Be sure to give your car insurance firm a call immediately after the accident. Your insurance firm can suggest appropriate steps to take. That includes advice on choosing the right towing firm with reasonable towing rates and timely service delivery.

Some insurance companies can also arrange a quick pick-up of your car to their repair centre. If reaching your insurer isn't possible sooner, you can still have your car towed. But it'll be highly crucial to follow the next tips below.

Determine Whether Your Car Requires Towing

For most drivers, towing their vehicle is the first thing that comes in mind after a collision. The reality, however, is that you may still be able to drive off your car from the accident scene yourself. When there are no fluid leaks, no mirror damage or spoilt brakes, headlights and taillights, you can safely drive your car to the nearest repair shop after a collision.

If none are working or you feel the car is unsafe, it's better to consider a towing service. Moreover, if there is a traffic officer within the scene of the accident, ask them whether it'll be safe to drive off the vehicle to a repair shop.

Consider Roadside Assistance

If you can access roadside assistance services through your car manufacturer, consider calling them in advance before reaching out to a local towing service. However, always keep in mind that towing isn't covered by some roadside repair companies, especially after a collision. Make sure to specify your involvement in a collision, after which the company must inform you whether post-collision towing is part of their coverage.

Read the Towing Paperwork Carefully Before Signing

Before signing the towing contract or making any payments, ensure you thoroughly read through the paperwork. Ask for an itemised invoice for your perusal and not just a vague work order or contract. Besides, only sign up for your vehicle to be towed to your preferred repair shop.

Finally, avoid signing contract papers that do not explicitly outline what you'll be paying for in advance. Don't forget to keep the invoices and receipts provided by the towing firm. These documents are vital when presenting your case to the auto insurance company for reimbursement.

Top Towing Tips

Hey! My name is Richard and I would like to give you some advice about what you need to do if your car breaks down. Many people go through their lives without thinking that one day their car may break down. However, when it occurs, you will certainly know about it and you may begin to panic. I began to panic when my auto broke down 60 miles out of Perth on a quiet country road. Thankfully, I managed to contact a local tow truck company on my phone and they came right out and rescued me. Since then, I have been trying to educate people about using towing services.
